Hello,
I'm the chairman of the local caving club (Oregon High Desert Grotto) in Bend, and I'm trying to hunt down some loose ends regarding a few known, but lost caves within the city limits of Bend, as well as just outside the city limits. Any within Redmond would be interesting as well.
Confidentiality is guaranteed, and is practically our motto! As an ethical caver, we try to keep most cave locations secret for fear of vandalism. And for that matter, if anyone asks me about caves, I'm sorry to say I can't devulge any information. But if you're interested in going caving, our group will be happy to take you out for a test run and see how you do.
Here's a few locations I'm still working on:
- Reed Market Road Cave, just west of the intersection with 27th st.
- Mann Cave possibly near the old westside landfill in Bend
- a blowing hold possibly on the north side of Overturf Butte, probably located in a house.
- A cave near Long Butte, possibly on north side. Just north of Bend.
- A cave possibly near SE Desert Woods Ave, or off of Ferguson. This cave is located and accessed via the house. The tube was about 100 feet long and was once used as a wine cellar, and possibly for marijuana cultivation before it was busted and sold to new owners. Original lead was from Kit Korish.
- A cave near Porcupine Butte (as it's been referred to), which is actually a small tumulus just north of Pilot Butte, off of Shepard Rd.
- Another cave just off Neff rd, just east of Pilot Butte Middle School. Supposedly it was filled in and was located by Munchkin Manor. I'd love a GPS coordinate of this if for nothing else than posterity.
- An old cave in the the north Industrial section of Bend, off of Brinson Blvd, or near there. The cave has probably been filled in, but I'd love to obtain a GPS coordinate for it.
- A cave off of Bear Creek Rd, probably east of 15th st, but no further than 27th. Original description has it's entrance hidden under a pile of old wood, or firewood. And the entrance might have been a crack.
- Machine Gun Nest Cave
- a cave that may be filled in, was located near the new Les Schwab/Lowes commercial area, and a little west of there. Supposedly was a crack on top of a tumulus.
- any caves east of Bend, near Gosney Rd, or Billadeau Rd. I suspect there are some caves here.
- and if you know of any others that I may possibly not be aware of (like out in the desert or the woods), shoot me an email, I'd love to hear about it!
Thanks!
Matt
